SgtMaj John Marion Malnar
Biography
Command Sergeant Major John Marion Malnar dedicated 25 years of courageous service to the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in 1943 and serving through three major conflicts. During World War II, he participated in the pivotal invasion of Timian, Saipan, and Okinawa, demonstrating bravery and resilience in some of the war’s most intense battles. In the Korean War, Malnar served as a squad leader with George Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, landing at Inchon and fighting near Seoul, where he continued to lead despite being severely wounded. In just 10 days of combat, he earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart, a testament to his extraordinary valor and leadership under fire. Malnar’s final service came during the Vietnam War, where he was mortally wounded at Dai Do on May 2nd 1968. His legacy is one of unwavering dedication, sacrifice and heroism.
