CSM John “Jack” Burn
Biography
Command Sergeant Major John “Jack” Burns, a 1979 GHS graduate, has dedicated his life to service, both in the military and in education. Over a distinguished 33-year career in the United States Army, Jack achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major (E-9) and completed three overseas deployments following September 11, 2001. His military honors include the Bronze Star, two Legions of Merit, the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Meritorious Unit Citation for his role in Operation Enduring Freedom 2014 in Kuwait. While serving his country jack also made a lasting impact at Gillespie High School as a history teacher, where he inspired students with his leadership and dedication. Beyond the classroom, he coached football and track and sponsored Drama Club, Miners Light, and the National Honor Society, helping students grow academically, socially, and personally. Jack’s dual commitment to national service and student development reflects his deep sense of duty and compassion. His legacy is one of honor, mentorship, and community impact.
